Alzheimer’s Prevention
Recent news reports tell us that CT scans give approximately 30,000 people cancer annually. It seems that we really were unaware that the radiation from CT scans has always been at such a high level. Radiation is always a wild card. Scientists insist that there is no reason to be concerned about radio waves involved in the cell phones we utilize. However, this is the same thing they would have said about CT scans just a year ago. Believe it or not, though, there are positive effects attributed to cell phone radiation. There is some current thought that excessive exposure to cell phone or radio wave radiation could actually help prevent the development of Alzheimer’s, at least to some extent. In addition to preventing Alzheimer’s, heavy cell phone use might actually reverse memory loss in those who have already been affected.
Truthfully, they have proven this only in mice but not in people. Does Alzheimer’s actually afflict mice, and would it be possible to differentiate between a mouse with a bad memory and one with a good memory? What could a mouse possibly need to recall, you might ask? Well, you are probably aware that many experiments are performed that involve mice navigating through mazes, right? Researchers began by using healthy mice, then they changed their genetic coding so that they would develop symptoms that mimicked Alzheimer’s symptoms with a great deal of brain-plaque – deposits of the protein beta-amyloid that have always been a hallmark symptom of Alzheimer’s disease. Tests on mice showed that radiation heats the temperature of the brain and reduces plaque. So it is currently hypothesized that exposing an Alzheimer’s patient to strong radio waves might actually melt away the brain plaque, there by preventing or reversing the disease.
So how do these mouse tests compare to human ones? Scientists expect there will be a high degree of correlation. The memories of the mice were tested for items that people have difficulty remembering when they have Alzheimer’s. All of the mouse tests were derived from real tests that have been used on humans. They are attempting to utilize more powerful radio waves in their mouse studies to find out if they ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s more effectively at a higher intensity. Some studies that have attracted attention have revealed that there is some risk for the development of a brain tumor when a person uses a cell phone excessively, and a warning has been issued by the WHO advising children to avoid cell phones. However, if you’re older, maybe a little cell phone chatter will do you good.
